Suubi’s Animal Friends

Luganda and Suubi’s Cultural Connection

For the linguistically curious,  Luganda is the language of the Baganda people who are an ethnicity from the traditional and pre-colonial Buganda Kingdom.

Uganda is a country that consists of more than 50 different ethnic groups and is named after the Buganda Kingdom. Suubi is a Muganda, and his name means “Hope.”

In the book, the animals Suubi encounters have traditional Baganda names rather than their actual names in Luganda. I chose to do this because the names may not be easy for our young readers to pronounce. Our goal is to foster a love for reading!
